Updated On: Nov 13, 2023

                                                                                                            November 6, 2023

To: ALL Bargaining Members

Subject:  Solicitation for NTEU Chapter 143 Union Stewards

NTEU 143 is seeking interested individuals to become part of the Stewardship program. In the interest of all its members, NTEU 143 wishes to fill vacancies throughout the El Paso Field Office.

A steward’s key role is to represent and defend the interests of their fellow employees. Stewards enforce the National Collective Bargaining Agreement (NCBA) and create the backbone of an effective union. The union is judged by their stewards. The stewards must be fair and look out for the well-being and interest of its members. Stewards encourage members to take an interest in their chapter and become the link between the members, union, and management. The stewards keep the members and union officers informed about the day-to-day operations and management’s attitudes.

As such, the stewards will also be actively involved in different committees throughout the fiscal year, to include but not limited to: Joint Achievement Committees (JAC), Bid and Rotation Bargaining Teams, Holiday Leave Plans, and other bargaining groups. Further, stewards will participate in representational/adverse matters, such as investigatory interviews, filing grievances, and presenting Oral replies to upper management, as part of the disciplinary and adverse action appeal process. Stewards are also encouraged to attend quarterly meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS: Steward selections will be based on qualifications and merit. Candidates must be selfless, always seeking the member’s interest first. Stewards must be able to represent fellow members in an unbiased way to ensure that the representative process is adhered to. This will ensure that all members are not unjustly treated and/or disciplined. Good oral and written communication skills are preferred.

HOW TO APPLY: Interested individuals must send a letter of consideration outlining what they believe to be a good steward and the reasons and/or qualifications they possess to become a union steward. Please send an email COB Friday, December 1, 2023 with a memo attachment to solidarity@nteu143.org. On the subject line, write Stewardship application. Prior interested individuals need to re-apply. No late submissions will be accepted.

In Solidarity,

Gustavo (Gus) Sanchez, NTEU 143-President
